Challenging weekend for Kenny at Mid Ohio

Aidan Kenny endured a challenging weekend at Mid Ohio over the weekend in the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America Championship.

Having completed a two day test at the circuit just two weeks before the event Aidan was confident of a strong weekend. After free practice on Friday Aidan qualified in P2 for race 1 and Pole position for race 2 in his ACI Motorsports Porsche 992 GT3 Cup Car.

As the field took the green flag for race 1 Aidan held position and the leading three cars edged away from the pack. As they started lap 3 Aidan dived up the inside into turn 1 and attacked for the lead but couldn’t make it stick and was nudged back into P3. On lap 12 a full course yellow was shown neutralising the race and bunching up the pack, with 5 minutes to go the green was shown but Aidan had picked up some dirt on his tyres and was nudged back to P4 over the next set of corners. Unfortunately, another full course yellow was required and with 2 minutes remaining Aidan was unable to regain his position with the race finishing under yellow.

With heavy rain on Sunday the field started race 2 behind the safety car with Aidan on pole position, the safety car pulled off with only 16 minutes of the race remaining. Aidan immediately came under attack from the P2 car and whilst defending hit some surface water and aquaplaned off the track. Aidan managed to re-join but had dropped to P21 overall and set about regaining positions, within two laps he was up to P17 but shortly after another full course yellow was shown ending any chances of fighting his way back to the front. The race finished behind the safety car with Aidan crossing the line in P6 in the Pro-Am class.

“I have to say it was a very disappointing result from the weekend especially as we showed so much pace in qualifying and race 1 but we still managed to bag valuable points towards the championship. We will take away the positives from the weekend, regroup and prepare for the next event”.

The next round of the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America is at Road America on August 12th & 13th.
