Double Podium for Aidan Kenny at Road America
The fourth round of the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America took place at Road America near Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Road America is another new track for Aidan having never raced there before. Qualifying took place on Saturday with Aidan qualifying in a fantastic P2.
Race 1 started at 14.30 local, as the 22 car field headed into turn one Aidan was nudged back to P3 by the #117. Aidan continued to apply pressure and at the end of Lap 1 the #117 made a mistake in the last corner and went off moving Aidan into P2. With the #117 stuck in the gravel the full course yellow was bought out to retrieve the stricken car. With 25 minutes remaining the green flag was shown and racing resumed, Aidan was now chasing down the leader whilst defending from an attacking P3. With 15 minutes left of the race Aidan had extended the gap to P3 by almost 3 seconds and closed the gap to the leader to 0.5 seconds and as they approached turn 5 Aidan slipped underneath the #29 to take the lead. Almost immediately a full course yellow was shown for a car off track. With the field now bunched up and just over 6 minutes remaining the green flag was shown to resume racing and Aidan held the lead at the restart. Now under pressure from the #29 Aidan pushed hard to extend his lead and they ended the final lap Aidan crossed the line almost 1 second in the lead to take his sixth win of the season.
For Race 2 Aidan started from Pole Position, as the green flag waved Aidan held the lead until turn 5 when the #29 slipped past to take the lead. Aidan continued to pressure the leader whilst managing his tyres ready for an attack. With 5 minutes to go the two leaders had pulled away from the rest of the field by 6 seconds but a full course yellow was bought out to retrieve a stricken car. The green flag was waved with one lap remaining, but the white last lap flag was not shown to the drivers, Aidan closed on to the bumper of the #29 to mount his attack for the lead when the chequered flag was shown for the end of the race with Aidan missing out by 2 tenths of a second.
Aidan Kenny
“It’s been another great race for me at Road America especially as I have never been here before. I’m a little frustrated with the end of race 2 as we were not shown the last lap flag which cost me another win, but we have extended our lead in the championship which is the main thing”
The next round of the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America is at Indianapolis on 2nd – 4th September.
